The home of Piero della Francesca, Petrarch and Vasari.
The city of Arezzo has ancient roots and its famous sons include Giorgio Vasari, Piero della Francesca and Francesco Petrarch.
Even though part of the medieval city was destroyed during World War II, the center of Arezzo still has many splendid monuments, churches, palazzos and museums.
It is impossible not to be fascinated by its most famous church, the Basilica of San Francesco. Inside the church is Piero della Francesca’s fresco cycle of the Legend of the True Cross, a priceless Renaissance masterpiece.
Alongside the medieval towers stands the imposing Loggiato Vasariano that surrounds the Piazza Grande.
Some maintain that the loggia was the model and “trial” for what the artist later created for the Uffizi in Florence.
Other sights not to miss include the Medici Fortress built by Cosimo I, the Palazzo della Fraternita dei Laici and the Pieve di Santa Maria, one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture.
