Next to the palazzo stands the Torre del Mangia, one of the oldest and tallest towers in Italy. The palazzo overlooks the Piazza del Campo with its travertine ribs that create its shell shape. The piazza is famous around the world for the Palio delle Contrade horse race that is run twice a year.
