Worth seeing is the majestic Duomo, the recognizable Palazzo Comunale, built by the Government during the Republic of Siena, and completed by the very high Torre del Mangia, considered one of the oldest and tallest towers in Italy. The building overlooks the beautiful Piazza del Campo with travertine ribs creating a shell shape. The square is well known throughout the world for hosting the Palio delle Contrade twice a year: for these occasions, it is covered with tuff powder to facilitate the horses in the race.
